I love the dialogue between Lyla and Monae- it feels so real, like I’m eavesdropping on a deep conversation between friends. The Remembering and The Mirror reflections after each section add so much depth, allowing me to pause and take in the lessons.
Reading this in manuscript form, I intentionally created a welcoming space for myself; listening to lounge jazz music as I read. It set the perfect mood, making the experience feel familiar and intimate, as though the story was my own.
What stands out is the vulnerability in the storytelling. The transparency is so refreshing- it feels like the writer is giving us all permission to show up fully, to be honest with ourselves, and to grow alongside the characters.
