Taking the Anxiety out of Non Profit Employee Performance Evaluations :)

The Employee Performance Evaluation process offers an opportunity for Managers and Team Members to take precious time together, to assess their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This experience should never be a surprise for either party, as it is imperative for employees to receive genuine feedback on their performance on a regular basis, both formally and informally. However, the Performance Evaluation process can also be stressful for everyone involved as well.

Here are a few tips:

1) When providing Supervisor Feedback, please share specific and concrete examples of employee performance and behavior. It’s not enough to say, “You’re doing great!” You must specify the exact behaviors and outcomes that contribute to the employee's successes and/or struggles within your organization.

2) Along with the day-to-day tasks involved with an organizational role, there are also many other Core Competencies which contribute to both job satisfaction and performance. Explore ways to strengthen these areas for each of your Team Members, through personal/ professional training and development. Role Core Competencies may include:

a. Time Management, Priorities & Multi- Tasking

b. Creativity & Adaptability

c. Facilitation Skills

d. Project/ Program/ Service Delivery Management

e. Outreach and Public Speaking

3) If you are a new Supervisor, or just want to brush up on your management and leadership skills, here are our PMC recommended reads:

b. The Art of Leadership, by J. Donald Walters -

c. How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie -

d. Who Moved My Cheese, by Spencer Johnson -

f. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey -

In our travels, we’ve found that many non profits are lacking the most effective Performance Evaluation documents, which are in alignment with non profit management, operations, and values… SO, we’ve created both Annual and 90 Day (Supervisor and Employee Self Evaluation) Templates just for you! 😊
